CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

“What happened after I left?” asked Myrtle, as she and Daisy ate their lunch at Miss Madeline’s.

Daisy told her about Mr. Abramovitz and the tooth, and how Doctor Sherman described the attack.

“But I thought Mr. Brown made a good point about the spade,” said Daisy, recounting the testimony he’d elicited from Doctor Sherman.

“Good for him,” said Myrtle, dipping her spoon into her white chicken chili. “It’s about time he started putting up a defense. I don’t think he’s anywhere near as good as Mr. Lawrence was.”

“The lawyer who defended Mr. Momet?”

“Yes.”

“You do remember Mr. Momet was found guilty?”

“But Mr. Lawrence put up a great defense,” countered Myrtle. “Besides, Mr. Momet was later exonerated.”

“So what you’re saying is that Mr. Lawrence was such a great lawyer he couldn’t get his client off, even though he was innocent?”

“Well . . . regardless, I don’t think I would want Mr. Brown to defend me even if it was for spitting on the sidewalk.”

“Is spitting on the sidewalk against the law?”

“I don’t know, but it should be. I swear, I could do a better job than he’s doing.”

“I think you already did,” said Daisy.

“Yeah, and it got me kicked out of the courtroom.”

By the time Daisy returned to the courtroom, the proceedings were underway. Myrtle had made her promise to take notes, to share later, and then headed back to the library to make sure everything was going all right there.

As Daisy settled into her seat, she saw Herman Hutchinson sitting in the witness box.

“Now, Mr. Hutchinson,” said Jake, “you told Constable de la Cruz the night Mr. Mitchell was murdered, you saw Mr. Jørgensen in the vicinity of his house.”

“Yah, that’s true, I did.”

“And you were coming from Mr. Mitchell’s house?”

“Yah. We’d had a few drinks to celebrate the New Year coming in.”

“And Mr. Mitchell was alive when you left him.”

Herman nodded. “As alive as you or I.”

“What time was this?” asked Jake.

“Around ten o’clock.”

“Where was Mr. Jørgensen when you saw him, exactly?”

“Down the street, under one of the street lamps. Like I told the Constable, he must have been drinking pretty heavy, too, eh, ’cause he was stumbling all around.”

“Thank you. No more questions.”

“Mr. Hutchinson,” said Baron, approaching Herman, “what was your relationship with the deceased?”

“With Frank? We was friends. Ever since college. We graduated together.”

“And you say Mr. Mitchell was alive when you left his house. How do we know that to be true? How do we know you didn’t kill him yourself?”

“Why would I?” asked Herman. “Like I said: we was friends.”

Baron thought for a moment.

What would have been the motive?

“No more questions,” said Baron, returning to his desk.

Judge Hurstbourne shook his head. “Very well. Mr. McIntyre, any more witnesses?”

“No, your honor,” said Jake, rising to his feet.

“Mr. Brown, do you have any witnesses to call?” asked the judge.

“Your honor, I call my client, Lars Jørgensen.”

“Mr. Jørgensen,” said Baron, after Lars was sworn in, “do you know why you’re here in this courtroom?”

“’Cause they tink I done killed Mr. Mitchell,” replied Lars.
